While camping at Greenbelt National Park in Maryland, we drove over to Mt. Vernon, VA. We spent a nice day touring the home, the grounds and other buildings. Easy to keep up when you have slaves.
He eventually decided that slavery was repugnant and did free them in his later life. We did come away with the feeling that he was a very nice man.
We also saw his teeth - they were not made of wood, but ivory, gold, lead, and both human and animal teeth. Of all the founding fathers, he was the most athletic, most adventuresome, a great dancer and horseman and, reputedly, a real man of action.
He married Martha Dandridge Custis, a rich widow, who was a very independent type and actually accompanied George to Valley Forge during that famous horrible winter, keeping up the morale of the troops.
