We stayed in Waterwheel Campground in Boone, NC - yes, named after "the" Daniel Boone. It was a good location to visit the town of Blowing Rock.
Blowing Rock is a lovely "storybook" village just off the Blue Ridge Mountain Parkway, filled with upscale shops and cute restaurants, one of which we visited for lunch - the Six Pence Pub. The town was named after " The Blowing Rock", a rocky outcropping in a very windy area with a famous story behind it.
Two star-crossed lovers, one Cherokee and the other from the enemy tribe, the Catawba, were being torn apart by his duty to return to his tribe. In desperation, he leaped from the gorge to the rocks below. The maiden beseeched the Great Spirit to bring her lover back to her. The famous winds of the John's River Gorge blew her lover back into her arms. Awh!
Here's Joe by the Blowing Rock.
