-----Lowell Observatory, Flagstaff AZ

We were so happy that someone suggested that we not miss this Observatory in Flagstaff. This is where Clyde Tombaugh discovered the planet Pluto in 1930 and the Observatory is now a Registered National Historic Landmark. We attended a short movie about the current night sky (city girls like Irene didn't know that the sky changes by day & season - she did know about the moon, though). For future reference, Irene bought an "astronomy for dummies" type book.

But the best part was looking through the 16 inch telescopes (their famous 24 inch was not operational that night) - we saw: Mercury, Mars, Saturn with the rings and two of her largest moons (including the largest, Titan), our new Moon, the double star Castor, and a Star Cluster (millions of stars in a huge cluster). We could also see the Big Dipper and the North Star with the naked eye. It was just amazing!
