Irene was really shocked to learn that, not just the Japanese and Japanese-Americans were interned in the US during World War ll, but so were some Italians! The Italians who were in this country working on Italian cruise ships plus those Italians who delayed returning to Italy after working at their display at the 1939 World's Fair in New York were interned here in Fort Missoula. They were kept behind the fenced-in fort and there were guard dogs and guns, but it was not as bad as it sounds. Some Italians, especially the ship cooks, were allowed to work off base at the local hotels. They were allowed to return to Italy after Italy surrendered in 1943.
