Virgil Earp, the Marshall of Tomb-stone, and his brothers, Wyatt & Morgan, were being dissed by Ike Clanton, a young punk cowboy. The cowboy gang, consisting of the Clantons and the McLowrys, were rumored to have threatened to wipe out the Earp brothers. Clanton had lied to the Marshall and told him that the McLowrys were in Sonora, Mexico, when in fact, they had been seen just outside of town.
It was law in Tombstone that you were not to bring weapons into town. Since Marshall Earp now suspected that both the Clantons & the McLowrys were armed and dangerous, he added his brothers and Doc Holliday to the police force to try to keep the peace. While walking down Fourth Street, they came upon Ike Clanton, who had a Winchester rifle and a revolver on his hip. The Marshall walked up to him, grabbed the rifle and, at the same time, hit him a blow on the side of his head, stunning Clanton so that he was able to disarm him. The Marshall marched Clanton down to the police court and entered a complaint against him for carrying a deadly weapon. The court fined Clanton $25 - this was about 1:00 in the afternoon.
