To the left: Now a souvenir store (Irene bought postcards), this building dates from 1850 and once housed the Capitol of Arizona & New Mexico. Then it became a courthouse - the courthouse where, in 1880, the infamous Billy the Kid (real name - William H. Bonney) was sentenced to hang for committing murder. He was moved to a jail in Lincoln, NM and escaped while awaiting execution. He died in 1881, when shot by Sheriff Pat Garrett.
To the right: The El Patio Bar & Restaurant. We weren't allowed to go in because a movie was being filmed there - notice the equipment outside. There were also several film trucks on the side street. We were told by some of the workers that it is a film being made for Greece - it concerns a father who takes his children and fleas to Mexico. They used Mesilla to shoot some of the scenes.
