Mesilla, New Mexico

While staying in Las Cruces, we drove over to the neighboring little village of Mesilla. Back in 1850, some of the inhabitants of the Las Cruces area did not want to be citizens of the U.S. They wanted to be under Mexican rule, so they formed the little village of Mesilla. However, the Gadsen Purchase of 1854 put Mesilla back in the hands of the United States. These pix show the central Plaza - there were vendor tables around the square and a Mexican band by the bandstand. We bought some interesting homemade jellies & preserves, such as prickly pear cactus jelly. Look at that sky!
