You can see in these photos the remains of the living structures built within the canyon walls, which are 600 to 1000 ft. high. The residents had to be very agile to climb up, as the dwellings were about 60 - 100 ft. from the ground.
The homes were usually accessed by an opening a few feet up from the base of the home, so that the children couldn't easily climb out and fall off of the ledge. The round building in the upper righthand photo is a "kiva", or ceremonial room. This photo is a closeup of the one on the upper left.
