This is a huge, beautiful, yet out-of-the-way park. Stayed in Rio Grande Village Campground with full hook-ups - the other campground across the way had no hookups but was more "in the trees". It was very difficult to back into our site (a lot of jockeying back and forth for Joe), because the sites were not meant for 40' coaches. That's our "backyard" to the left.
After settling in, we walked & climbed to Boquillas Canyon (that's Irene with her walking stick hiking into the canyon) and went down to the Rio Grande - you could actually wade through it over to Mexico. Actually, that's probably what the Mexican fellow did who sold us another walking stick (half the price sold elsewhere - later found out it's illegal to buy from them). We could see his compadres and a horse on the other side. He asked Irene if she wanted to go over and ride the horse and then asked Joe if he wanted to sell his watch- couldn't figure that one out. This made Irene nervous because she had on her rings and we were alone with him at that point. We went back to our coach, never realizing we should have walked further into the canyon to the end. We came back another day and walked all the way in to the canyon.
Before dark, we went out again to observe the beautiful sunset on the Nature Trail, by climbing up the stone walkway and overlooking a mountain range - a New Year's Eve treat.
