DOWNTOWN FAIRBANKS, AK

We had a great time at dinner with Susan and Jess Motter, our friends from Fairbanks. Susan is Joe's sister's sister-in-law and is originally from Pennsylvania. She's been in Alaska for over 30 years. She & Jess have led very interesting lives, including having been bush pilots & fishing guides and owners of a fishing charter boat. Jess is now retired and Susan is the GM of an absolutely terrific restaurant (pictured here), Lavelle's. We enjoyed a delicious meal and a wonderful fried calamari appetizer.

This mile marker in downtown Fairbanks says we're 4527 miles from New York. We're downtown to enjoy the festivities for the Summer Solstice - June 21st, the longest day of the year. We're so far north that there is about 22 hours of sunshine and it never really gets dark at all - we love it!

There were many different music venues downtown at the Summer Solstice fair - this is Celtic Confusion playing great Celtic tunes. Some of the other music at the fair included big band sounds, rock, contemporary, etc.

One of the street scenes at the fair - look at that sky! There were many food, clothing and gift booths, and rides for the kids.
