WATSON LAKE, YUKON TERRITORY - 6/1/09

Watson Lake, YT, is located on Historical Milepost 635 of the Alaskan Highway. The record low temperature here was -74 degrees F, recorded in 1947! The annual snowfall is 90.6 inches.

Watson Lake was an important point during the construction of the Alaskan Highway. The Highway helped bring both people and commerce to this once isolated settlement.

Here are some photos of The Signpost Forest - it was started in 1942 by an army soldier in Company D, 341st Engineers, who was working on the Alaskan Highway. Travellers are still adding signs to the forest - the signs now number over 61,000. Had we realized this, we would have had a sign prepared. The shear number of signs from so many dfferent places is really interesting. We were able to pick out a sign from "Newtown PA", where Irene's daughter Kerry & her two children live, as well as a sign for the "Nittany Lions", the name of the football team from Penn State, where Irene's grandson, Karam, is a sophomore.
