Leadville, CO - 7/3/08

Another car trip we made while staying in Buena Vista was to Leadville, the highest incorp-orated city in the country, at an altitude of 10,152 feet. Leadville's history began as a mining town in 1860 with the discovery of gold. This boom only lasted 5 years, to be followed later by the discovery of silver. By 1880, Leadville had more than 30,000 residents, innumerable stores, hotels, boarding houses, and, of course, more than 100 saloons, dance halls, gambling joints, and brothels.

--- Upper Right: The Silver Dollar Saloon, established in 1879, is still in operation.

More street scenes. We enjoyed cappuccino at an internet cafe and bakery - we brought our laptop with us, hoping we could go online and check our mail, as we had so many difficulties doing so at our campground. Click on any photo in this blog to enlarge it.
