While staying at eleven Mile Reservoir, we drove to Pike's Peak. It was named after Lt. Zebulon Pike, from Lamington, NJ (near Bedminster)!! He was sent by President Jefferson in 1806 to ascertain the southwestern borders of the Louisiana Purchase. He never made it to the top, as he was forced back by snow, for which he was unprepared. Pike's Peak became a landmark for goldseekers who were heading west - "Pike's Peak or Bust" was painted on many of their wagons.
---Left: On the way up to the peak of the Peak, we passed this lovely lake setting.
---Right: After a very long, tortuous drive with many hairpin turns (tortuous especially for Irene, who hid her head part of the time so she wouldn't see the absolutely huge dropoffs with no railing on her side of the car), we arrived at the top. Of course, Joe took the drive in stride.
